Kobbie Mainoo Key to Bruno Fernandes Breaking Assist Record Again
Mainoo Key to Fernandes Breaking Assist Record Again

Bruno Fernandes has shattered the Premier League assists record this season, but the Manchester United captain could surpass even that remarkable feat next term with the help of Kobbie Mainoo.

The 31-year-old playmaker registered a record-breaking 21st league assist on the final day of the 2025/26 campaign against Brighton. His corner was headed home by Patrick Dorgu in the 33rd minute, giving Michael Carrick's side the lead and etching Fernandes' name into the history books. The moment was met with an outpouring of emotion from United players, who swarmed their captain. Fernandes had previously been tied with Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne on 20 assists.

This milestone capped an incredible individual campaign for Fernandes, who also played a pivotal role in securing Champions League football once again. His performances earned him both the Premier League Player of the Season and FWA Footballer of the Year awards.

Mainoo's Impact on Fernandes' Form

Remarkably, there is still room for improvement. Fernandes' best form this season came when sharing the field with young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo. The 21-year-old missed most of the campaign under former manager Ruben Amorim, who surprisingly snubbed him. However, Mainoo flourished under interim boss Michael Carrick from January onwards.

With Mainoo beside him in midfield, Fernandes racked up a staggering 17 assists. In the 16 matches Mainoo started, Fernandes provided 12 assists, underlining the productivity of their partnership. When Mainoo was absent, Fernandes' assist tally fell dramatically to just four. This highlights how devastating the duo can be when Mainoo plays in his natural deeper role, rather than being misused as a No. 10 by Amorim.

Projecting Future Success

With Carrick now permanently appointed as manager, Mainoo is expected to play a significant role next season. If the pair start all 38 league games together, Fernandes is projected to surpass even 21 assists. While around half of his assists this season came from corners, the synergy between the two midfielders is undeniable.

Manchester United's midfield recruitment plans this summer are busy, but Mainoo's regular presence will be pivotal if Fernandes is to eclipse his own record. The partnership has already shown its potential, and a full season together could yield historic numbers.
