Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris has urged caution regarding European qualification despite a crucial 3-1 victory over Everton that keeps their hopes alive. The Black Cats recovered from a first-half deficit to score three times through Brian Brobbey, Enzo Le Fee, and Wilson Isidor, lifting them within two points of seventh-placed Brighton with one game remaining.
Le Bris Warns Against Distraction
While Sunderland's only previous European campaign came in 1973-74 in the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, Le Bris is keen to avoid complacency. "It's on but it's not done," the Frenchman said. "The most important thing is to stay focused because when we start dreaming probably it is a distraction."
He acknowledged the challenge ahead: "The opponent next week will be strong so we have to be at our best. If it's the case at the end of the game we will have this conversation."
Le Bris praised his team's season: "It's a really good season: we hit the 40-point target early and were able to keep the consistency. The team showed they were still ambitious and played good football."
Gamble Pays Off at Half-Time
After a lacklustre first half, Sunderland took a tactical risk. "At half-time we agreed it was important to take more risks, even if the game became more unbalanced," Le Bris added. The move paid off as they netted three times after the break.
Moyes Disappointed with Everton
Everton manager David Moyes expressed frustration at his side's failure to capitalise. "Disappointed with the outcome, lots of parts of the game. The result frustrated me the most because I didn't think it was a true reflection of the game," he said.
Moyes admitted his team missed a big opportunity: "We put ourselves in a decent position all season to talk well about the team, I don't feel like talking well about them today as it was a big moment for us and we weren't able to take it."
Looking ahead, he indicated the need for reinforcements: "We need to try to find a way of improving that and that mainly always means we are going to have to bring in other players and try and see if we can step up again."
Sunderland now face Chelsea at home on the final day, needing a win and hoping Brighton slip up to secure a European spot.
