Lamptey's Fiorentina Contract Terminated After Injury Woes

Former Chelsea and Brighton defender Tariq Lamptey's stint at Fiorentina has come to an abrupt end, with the Serie A club agreeing to terminate his contract. The 25-year-old right-back, who broke through as an academy starlet at Stamford Bridge before making 122 appearances for Brighton, moved to Florence last summer for £5 million in search of a fresh start. However, he managed only 25 minutes of football for the club, which has now cut its losses after he missed 45 games due to injury.

Brief and Injury-Plagued Spell

Lamptey made his debut against Napoli but lasted just four minutes. He then suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury 21 minutes into a game against Como last September, which turned out to be his only start for Fiorentina. Despite agreeing to a three-year deal last summer, both the club and player have agreed that a mutual termination of the contract is best for all parties. Neither has publicly commented on the departure, and Fiorentina previously described the injuries as a 'complex medical situation'.

Free Agent Status and Future Prospects

Lamptey is now a free agent and will need to convince potential suitors that his body is ready to put the injury anguish behind him. The right-back burst onto the scene under Frank Lampard at Chelsea, making his debut as a 19-year-old in 2019. He made two more appearances before Brighton signed him for £3 million. Lamptey's early promise earned him recognition at England Under-18 and Under-21 levels before he switched allegiance to represent Ghana's senior side. However, he will not be in contention for selection for the Black Stars' World Cup campaign following the ACL setback.

Knee and hamstring injuries were a constant menace for the speedster during his time at Brighton, and he fell down the pecking order after struggling to consistently stay fit. The diminutive defender will now focus on regaining fitness and finding his next club in the summer.
