HMRC has issued a new update for workers, explaining how they can obtain a tax refund more quickly. The tax authority revealed that hundreds of thousands of taxpayers have already submitted their Self Assessment returns early, with a record-breaking April for filings.
Record Early Filings
According to HMRC statistics released on Tuesday, more than 298,900 people filed their returns between April 6 and 12, the first week of the tax year. On the opening day alone, 86,270 taxpayers submitted their forms, with Easter Monday proving to be the most popular date. Overall, April saw nearly 740,000 returns lodged for the 2025 to 2026 tax year, setting a new record.
HMRC reminded those unsure whether they need to file that they can use the checker tool on GOV.UK to confirm. New Self Assessment filers must first register to obtain a Unique Taxpayer Reference, which is required to complete and submit the return.
Benefits of Filing Early
Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC's chief customer officer, commented: "For thousands of people, filing early and staying on top of their finances has become the norm. It takes the pressure off in January and means they can spend their time focusing on their business and doing things they love. Make a start on your tax return today by searching 'Self Assessment' on GOV.UK."
More than 12 million taxpayers are expected to file a 2025 to 2026 tax return by the January 31, 2027 deadline. However, HMRC urges millions to begin now and file promptly. Filing early means taxpayers discover what they owe sooner, allowing them to prepare for payments and avoid the stress of last-minute filing.
Payment and Refund Options
HMRC has updated its guidance on early filing and help with settling tax bills on GOV.UK. Taxpayers can set up a budget payment plan to make weekly or monthly direct debit contributions towards their Self Assessment tax bill, spreading the cost throughout the year rather than paying the full amount by the January 31 deadline.
Where tax has been overpaid, refunds can be requested once the return is processed. Individuals can check if they are owed a refund through the HMRC app. Filing early also allows people to complete their return carefully, ensuring all information is correct, which reduces errors and potential penalties, HMRC stated.
Making Tax Digital Expansion
From April 6, 2026, sole traders and landlords with turnover exceeding £50,000 must use Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax and submit quarterly summaries of their income and expenditure to HMRC. From April 2027, this requirement will extend to those with combined turnover above £30,000. Agents can register their clients via GOV.UK.
Those covered by MTD will still need to submit an annual Self Assessment tax return. HMRC confirmed it is urging customers to get ahead and file their return for the 2025 to 2026 tax year now.
Beware of Scams
Fraudsters often impersonate HMRC to steal money or personal details. Individuals are urged to pause and consider whether any request is genuine before sharing personal information, never click on links in unsolicited messages, and never share HMRC login credentials. Legitimate HMRC contact details and scam identification guidance can be found on GOV.UK by searching for 'HMRC phishing and scams'.
A comprehensive range of online help and support is available on GOV.UK to assist individuals in completing and submitting their tax returns.
