Felix Nmecha Link Shows Liverpool's Cautious Summer Approach

Liverpool have been linked with Borussia Dortmund and Germany midfielder Felix Nmecha, but the interest highlights the club's cautious and methodical approach to the summer transfer window. Despite the departure of key players, the Reds are not expected to make a move for Nmecha unless they first offload some of their existing midfield options.

Liverpool's Summer Transfer Activity

Liverpool surprised many last week by triggering the £34.5million release clause of Spain international winger Victor Munoz from Osasuna. This is the first signing for new head coach Andoni Iraola. The summer is set to be busy, with Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson, and Ibrahima Konate already departing for Tottenham Hotspur and Real Madrid respectively. The already-agreed arrival of £60m Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes will partially cover Konate's loss, while Liverpool are assessing options to bolster their attack, with RB Leipzig's Yan Diomande as their chief target.

Felix Nmecha's Profile and Suitability

Reports from Germany claim Liverpool are among clubs that have enquired about Nmecha, who is 25 and has a release clause of €80million (£69m) applicable in summer 2027, dropping to €70m (£60m) the following year. However, there is no clause this summer, allowing Dortmund to set their own price. Nmecha started his career at Manchester City, making three senior appearances before moving to Wolfsburg, and would be considered homegrown, making him attractive to Liverpool given their shortage of such senior squad members.

Midfield Depth and Potential Departures

Liverpool are well-stocked in central midfield with Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister, Curtis Jones, and Wataru Endo, plus youngsters Trey Nyoni and Stefan Bajcetic. Gravenberch recently signed a new long-term deal, and Szoboszlai has been offered one, indicating they are in Liverpool's plans. Nyoni (18) and Bajcetic (returning from injuries) could be loaned out. However, the futures of Jones, Endo, and Mac Allister are uncertain. Jones is in the last year of his contract, with Liverpool open to a sale at £30m-plus, but Inter Milan have shown little interest. Endo, 33, is also out of contract next season. Mac Allister has been a target for Real Madrid and has not been offered a new contract, with two years left on his deal.

Liverpool's Transfer Strategy

Liverpool will be "spinning plates" all summer and prefer not to bolster their midfield until one or more players are moved on. Should a deal be struck for Jones, for example, then the dominoes could start to fall. Until then, movement in the engine room seems unlikely, according to reports.
