David Raya has been instrumental in Arsenal's pursuit of the Premier League title, and his remarkable saves have even captivated the children of manager Mikel Arteta. The Spanish goalkeeper is on course to win his third consecutive Golden Glove award, having kept 18 clean sheets this season, underpinning Arsenal's championship challenge.
Raya's Journey from Non-League to Stardom
Raya's story is one of perseverance. He began his career in non-league football with Southport, won over Arsenal fans who were initially loyal to his predecessor Aaron Ramsdale, and has since become a full Spain international. This season, he has surpassed himself with extraordinary stops, including a tip-over against Brighton and a point-blank save from West Ham's Mateus Fernandes, establishing himself among the world's best goalkeepers.
Arteta's Children Share Viral Clips
Arteta revealed that his own children have been showing him viral clips of Raya's saves from different angles. "My kids showed it to me the other day - and with a close camera because normally we look with a wide angle camera. But with a close camera you can see the moments that he has produced, you can see they are incredible," Arteta said. "It's a lot of work from a lot of people and big credit to them and especially to David. Now we have the three most important games. Hopefully we don't have to see any of those saves because that will mean we could have done things better a bit earlier."
Arsenal's Long-Term Interest in Raya
Three years ago, Arsenal signed Raya on loan from Brentford, a move that sparked backlash as fans questioned replacing fan favourite Ramsdale. However, Arteta revealed that Arsenal had first targeted Raya six years earlier. "Years before, especially when Emi [Martinez] left, that was the idea to bring him in at that moment. We let Emi go and then we couldn't do it!" Arteta explained. "It wasn't just me, it was Inaki Cana, the goalkeeper coach, as well, Edu who was sporting director at the time to support the idea. The player has tremendous personality to fulfil the role that is demanded, it was demanded at that time when it was very, very difficult."
Raya's Development and Mentality
Arteta praised Raya's quality, willingness to learn, work ethic, and mentality. "When you have that, when you have a goalkeeping coach who is as demanding as him as well, then you have a team which functions individually but also collectively to show what they can do then it's a good mixture. What David has done for us in the past few years has been incredible."
Raya's journey is remarkable: born in Spain, he joined Blackburn as a teenager, was loaned to Southport, and eventually landed at Brentford. These experiences strengthened his mindset and determination, turning him into a world-class keeper known for his ability with his feet. Arteta added, "It's incredible. His journey. It's incredible the way he has matured, the way he had to earn things. I think that shows you his mentality now. When you have to really earn it and you value certain things it is a bit different not only for him but for his family, his friends, his agent and his parents. They all know how much you have to do to arrive here and how hard it is to maintain yourself at that level."
