A Carnival Cruise Line passenger has tragically died after reportedly losing control of her mobility scooter and plunging into the water at the company's private resort in the Bahamas. The incident occurred on Saturday, May 9, while the Carnival Celebration was docked at Celebration Key, a private destination developed by the cruise line. The 88-year-old American woman was on a seven-day Eastern Caribbean voyage that had departed Miami on May 3 and returned on May 10, according to CruiseMapper.
Details of the Incident
Shortly before midday local time (5pm BST), the woman lost control of her scooter and drove off the pier, falling into the water. Carnival Cruise Line confirmed the event, stating that teams responded swiftly and successfully retrieved her from the water. Despite resuscitation efforts, she did not survive. The Royal Bahamas Police Force and the coroner’s office have taken custody of her body for examination.
Police Investigation
The Royal Bahamas Police Force reported that the woman "reportedly lost control and drove off the pier" around 12pm local time. During the fall, she is believed to have struck her head against the hull of the vessel before entering the water. A police statement added: "Despite efforts to save her life, she later succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead by a local physician." The victim’s identity has not been publicly released, and her cause of death remains undetermined.
Witness Accounts
Two passengers, Edward and Linsy Egersheim, witnessed the incident and spoke to South Florida outlet WSVN 7 News. They reported that the woman appeared to suffer a heart attack at the time of the accident. Mr. Egersheim said: "She had a heart attack, went off with the scooter, and banged her head pretty bad, and then her husband tried to do what he could, and he ended up hurting himself as well." Ms. Egersheim added that "getting back on the boat was really sad. We walked past the scooter and all you could think about is that poor lady."
Celebration Key, Carnival's private destination in the Bahamas, is a resort built specifically for cruise passengers. The incident has raised concerns about safety measures for passengers using mobility scooters at such facilities. The cruise line has not commented on any potential changes to protocols following the accident.
