The Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs are poised for a monumental showdown on the opening weekend of the 2026 NFL season. ESPN's 'Monday Night Football' will kick off its campaign on September 14 with this highly anticipated matchup, although the venue remains unconfirmed as the league finalises its full schedule, set for release on Thursday night.
Injury Concerns for Star Quarterbacks
A major storyline heading into the opener is the availability of two-time NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes. The Chiefs quarterback sustained a torn ACL and LCL in his left knee on December 14, a devastating blow that effectively ended Kansas City's playoff hopes. Mahomes is aiming to return for Week 1, but his readiness remains uncertain. On the Broncos' side, quarterback Bo Nix is expected to be fully fit for training camp after breaking a bone in his right ankle on January 18. Denver last season fell to the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship Game, with the Patriots subsequently losing to the Seattle Seahawks in the Super Bowl.
Other Key Matchups Revealed
The initial schedule announcements, made during network upfront presentations, also highlighted several other marquee games. The Buffalo Bills will inaugurate their new stadium on September 17 against the Detroit Lions, marking the start of Amazon Prime Video's 'Thursday Night Football.' The Dallas Cowboys feature prominently, visiting the New York Giants on September 13 for NBC's 'Sunday Night Football' opener and hosting the Philadelphia Eagles on Thanksgiving Day, November 26, on Fox. Dallas has won its past four Thanksgiving games, including a 31-28 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs last year.
The late afternoon Thanksgiving game traditionally draws the largest regular-season audience. Last year's contest averaged 57.23 million viewers on CBS, making it the most-watched regular-season game in league history. This will be the second consecutive season Philadelphia takes the spotlight on Thanksgiving week. Jalen Hurts and the Eagles hosted last year's Black Friday game but lost to the Chicago Bears 24-15.
Monday's announcements mean the Cowboys now know the dates for three of their 17 games. It was revealed a couple of weeks ago that their game in Rio de Janeiro against the Baltimore Ravens will take place in Week 3 on September 27 and air on CBS.
