A new Channel 4 series, Escape to Florida, chronicles the journeys of British families who have relocated to the United States, capturing the emotional and practical challenges they face. Among the featured participants is a London family with a deeply personal reason for making the move.
Inherited Home and Emotional Ties
Dan, his wife Donna, and their two sons are one of the families appearing in the show. Their relocation to Florida was driven by an inheritance: the family home was left to them by Dan's uncle, Billy, who had served as the long-term tour manager for pop legend Sting. Donna recalled how Billy cherished time with their family, saying: 'He didn't have kids but he loved spending time with Dan and the boys and he loved us coming here so we used to visit him every summer, we had some good times.'
Tragically, Billy was diagnosed with cancer in 2019. In his final months, the family flew to Florida to care for him. Dan, aged 52, reflected: 'He went with dignity, he knew what was happening and we looked after him until the end. We miss him.' Billy left them his stunning waterfront home with a pool. Dan added: 'He's done so much for us that we need to stay here and keep his house going. Miss him big time.'
Financial Realities and New Beginnings
However, maintaining the Florida lifestyle comes at a cost. While Donna works as a beauty journalist, Dan has been unemployed since the relocation three and a half years ago. He is now studying for a career in real estate, acknowledging the need to transition from a holiday mindset: 'We've been over here for three-and-a-half years now and I've not really worked so I just need to realise that I'm not on holiday the whole time.' Passing his exams and entering the industry would be a significant milestone for the entire family.
