Aldi Unveils £5 Billion Investment in British Farming Across Four Ranges
Aldi Invests £5bn in British Farming Across Four Ranges

Aldi has announced a major transformation across its stores, unveiling a significant £5 billion investment in British farming and food production. The supermarket chain confirmed on Friday that this initiative will span four key ranges: eggs, meat, fruit, and vegetables. Through a series of long-term deals, Aldi aims to provide farmers and producers with greater confidence to invest in their businesses while bolstering British food supply chains.

Commitment to British Produce

Aldi revealed that it is targeting 50% of its home-grown produce to be sourced through long-term agreements by the end of 2027. These contracts will typically run for at least two years, offering stability to suppliers. As part of this commitment, the retailer has pledged £1.1 billion specifically to British egg production over the next five years.

To champion home-grown food, Aldi has partnered with Harriet Cowan, a farmer and star of the popular television series Clarkson's Farm. Cowan will encourage shoppers to purchase more British-grown fruit and vegetables. This collaboration follows new research indicating that many consumers are unaware that vegetables such as cucumbers, courgettes, and aubergines can be successfully cultivated in the UK.

Consumer Awareness

A survey conducted by OnePoll among 2,000 adults found that while 80% of respondents considered supporting British farmers important, only 27% actively considered whether fruit and vegetables were grown in Britain when making purchasing decisions. Harriet Cowan commented: "I'm passionate about highlighting the brilliant work British farmers do to bring high-quality food to our tables. I've loved teaming up with Aldi to learn more about the fruit and veg we grow here in the UK and to shine a light on what's in season."

Julie Ashfield, chief commercial officer at Aldi UK, stated: "British suppliers are at the heart of our business. These long-term agreements give farmers and producers the confidence to plan ahead, invest in their operations and build resilient supply chains."

Existing Partnerships

Among Aldi's enduring partnerships is Kent-based grower AC Goatham and Son, the exclusive supplier of British apples to the supermarket. This collaboration includes a dedicated "Aldi Orchard" that supplies stores across the country.

Seasonal Recipes

To assist shoppers in making the most of British produce, Harriet Cowan has selected a range of seasonal recipes. These include Creamy Pea and Pesto Pasta Skillet, Pork Tenderloin with Rhubarb Sauce, Beef and Pepper Stir Fry, and Hot Honey Carrots. The recipes are available online at www.aldi.co.uk/harrietcowan.
