Three Rare 50p Coins That Could Be Worth Over £2,000
A coin expert known as The Coin Collecting Wizard, with over 270,000 online followers, has identified three rare 50p coins that could collectively fetch up to £2,280. These coins, which may appear ordinary at first glance, can be worth significantly more than their face value if they feature specific errors or dates.
The 2017 Benjamin Bunny Rotation Error
The first coin highlighted is the 2017 Benjamin Bunny 50p, featuring Beatrix Potter's character. While most versions are worth only 50p, a rare rotation error can increase its value to around £30. The error occurs when the Queen's head is printed facing the wrong direction. Normally, when a coin is flipped over, the Queen's head should face left, but on a rotation error coin, it faces differently.
The 2009 Olympic Athletics 50p
The second coin is the 2009 athletics 50p, designed to commemorate the 2012 Olympic Games. It features a child's drawing of a high jump competitor. While 2.2 million of the 2011 version were released into circulation, the 2009 edition is much rarer and can be worth £250 or more. According to the expert, if you find this coin dated 2009, you can sell it for £250 plus.
The Aquatic 50p Error Coin
The third coin is the aquatic 50p, also from the 2012 Olympics, depicting a swimmer. The valuable version has wavy lines obscuring the swimmer's face, which appear only on the earliest 2011 editions. Later versions were modified to show the face above the water. The expert stated that if you find an aquatic 50p error coin with lines over the face, it could be worth a small fortune due to its scarcity.
These three coins together could command up to £2,280, making them a lucrative find for collectors and anyone checking their spare change.
