A Place to Call Home, the Australian post-WW2 period drama that has been called an "irresistible" and "binge-worthy" soap, is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video. The show, which ran for six series between 2013 and 2018, has become a favourite among Downton Abbey fans looking for melodrama and twisting family plots.
What is A Place to Call Home about?
The series centres on Sarah Adams, played by Marta Dusseldorp, who returns to Australia after twenty years abroad to rebuild her life. She soon finds herself at odds with wealthy matriarch Elizabeth Bligh, played by Noni Hazlehurst. Sarah also discovers that the husband she moved to Paris for — a man who had converted from Catholicism to the Jewish faith — survived World War II, sending her world into turmoil.
A rich cast and a bumpy road to success
Set in New South Wales, the show features Brett Climo as George Bligh, Craig Hall as Dr Jack Duncan, David Berry as James Bligh, Abby Earl as Anna Bligh, Arianwen Parkes-Lockwood as Olivia Bligh, Aldo Mignone as Gino Poletti, Sara Wiseman as Carolyn Bligh, Jenni Baird as Regina Standish, Tim Draxl as Henry Fox, and Frankie J. Holden as Roy Briggs.
The hit show was cancelled after its second series, but producers managed to secure additional funding, allowing it to continue and eventually reach six series, including a stint airing on the BBC.
Fans and critics are full of praise

Another fan wrote: "This Australian series has an excellent storyline, cast, and location. It is just a beautiful story with just enough suspense to keep you wanting more." They added: "The 50s were a beautiful and unique postwar period for the entire world."
A third reviewer said: "This is another fantastic series from Australia. The acting is brilliant, and the kind of issues this series deals with are quite hard-hitting and thought-provoking." Another added: "It isn't often that I find a series, especially with 6 seasons under its belt, that I find so engaging I can hardly stop watching it."
