Moston Lane Set to Become Manchester's 18th District Centre
Moston Lane to Become Manchester's 18th District Centre

Senior councillors are meeting this week to discuss a proposal that could transform Moston Lane into Manchester's 18th district centre, a designation that would place it alongside shopping hubs like Withington, Chorlton, and Levenshulme. The move is part of Manchester's draft local plan, which outlines the city's development up to 2039 and is expected to be formally adopted next summer.

Plans for Major Investment

The change is intended to support major investment and regeneration in the north Manchester neighbourhood. A £90m project is already in the pipeline, including a new public square, green spaces, and more homes. The area, just four miles from Manchester city centre, could become one of the most exciting parts of the city to live in and visit.

A report on the area's future states that Moston Lane 'performs an important localised role providing a diverse range of convenience, service and independent retail uses that meet the day-to-day needs of the surrounding community.' It also notes a 'vibrant street presence, active daytime economy and a strong sense of place.'

Council Support Expected

Manchester's most senior councillors are expected to show support for the proposals at Wednesday's meeting. Councillor Gavin White, the council's lead on housing and regeneration, said: 'The investment plan for Moston Lane forms one of the most ambitious projects within our city-wide district centre and localities regeneration programme.'

He added: 'It will see the creation of a brand-new public square, a new NHS GP health centre and new commercial spaces for shops, alongside new genuinely affordable homes for local families and residents.'

Existing Regeneration Efforts

The designation builds on multi-million-pound investment already made in Moston, including new pocket parks and green spaces, road safety works, alley-gates, and measures to tackle fly-tipping and environmental issues. 'Given this current and planned investment and our wider regeneration ambitions for Moston Lane it was important to consider its designation within the draft local plan,' White said.

Following independent analysis from consultants, the council is proposing that Moston Lane becomes the 18th district centre in the city. 'This reflects the ongoing growth of Moston Lane and underlines our commitment to help this high street and wider neighbourhood meet its massive potential in North Manchester,' White concluded.
