Megan McKenna has moved to Germany permanently after a terrifying home invasion by machete-wielding intruders left her afraid to stay in the UK alone. The former The Only Way Is Essex star, 33, revealed the incident, which took place two years ago, made her fearful of living by herself while her husband, footballer Oliver Burke, is based in Germany.
Details of the attack
Speaking on the Great Company With Jamie Laing podcast, McKenna described being robbed in her own home. She explained that the attack happened shortly after the couple's honeymoon in Montenegro, when Burke had to return to Germany the day after they landed. She fell asleep around 11pm and woke to find the house "shaking".
McKenna said: "I was such a disorientated mess. I was like, 'What?' And then I just knew that it was happening to me, and I was like, 'Oh my God'. I get goose pimples now thinking about it. They were inside my house, but I lock my bedroom door every night because I always worry about something happening to me when I'm on my own. The next thing I know, my mirror has come off my wall, and they're hacking a hole through my wall with a baseball bat."
Intruders demanded jewellery
Three masked men armed with machetes and baseball bats managed to hack a hole through a fake wall leading from her dressing room to her bedroom. McKenna, fearing for her dog's safety, called the police and then approached the intruders. She said: "I said, 'If I don't go and talk to them and ask them what they want, they're going to come in and kill my dog.' I went over to them. I was naked."
One of the men, wearing a balaclava, took her jewellery. McKenna also cut her foot, leaving "blood everywhere". She believes the break-in was "obviously targeted" and that the intruders only wanted her jewellery.
Aftermath and move to Germany
McKenna said the police were "amazing" but she was going through IVF to conceive her son Landon and could not face a trial. The intruders were caught, went to trial, and were released a year later. She said: "They're just roaming the roads."
McKenna, who rose to fame on Ex On The Beach, welcomed her son Landon with Burke in October 2024. The couple married in June 2025. She said the experience "changes you forever".
