Cardiff-born singer Marged Siôn has been touring the world as a backing vocalist-dancer for Self Esteem but had an emotional moment when returning home to the Welsh capital. She performed alongside Rebecca Lucy Taylor, better known as Self Esteem, at Cardiff Castle on Friday, July 24, as part of the venue's Depot Live summer gig season.
Emotional Homecoming
After the concert Siôn took to social media to reflect on the emotional night and shared a video of herself getting teary while on stage. In the footage she was consoled by the award-winning artist while holding a Welsh flag and saying: 'Mum I made it.'
Siôn captioned the post: 'CAERDYDD. I will never everrrr everrrrrr forget last night!! BRENHINES Y CASTELL/ QUEEN OF THE CASTLE FRRR.' She added: 'From being told I was too much, too emotional, too sensitive, too loud, too energetic, too myself for a lot of my time growing up in this city looool to then being celebrated for those exact qualities made me so emotional and healed something so deep for me last night.'
Welsh Expectations
Before the event Siôn was interviewed by journalist Caitlin Bryant for Depot Live where she said how excited she was and that she had 'literally got half of Cardiff coming.' She continued: 'I'm going to look out and just know probably half of everyone – it's going to be a very Welsh experience.'
Siôn even told the presenter that the man who fits her dad's hearing aids was planning on attending. She said: 'It's the most Cardiff, most Welsh thing I've ever heard in my life. So, yeah, I'm excited.'
Welsh Lessons
She also revealed that she has been teaching the lead singer some Welsh and that Self Esteem had been learning the language on Duolingo. Siôn said: 'She keeps saying "dwi eisiau pipi" but also "dwi eisiau" is like north Walian – I'm not sure where she's getting that from.'
That night Self Esteem did speak some Welsh on stage, impressing the crowd. She said: 'Dw i'n hoffi dreigiau' and 'Dwi eisiau mynd adref.' Siôn commented: 'She's really proud of it.'
