Glasgow's Loveable Rogue Named Top 50 UK Sunday Roast: Review
Loveable Rogue Glasgow: Top 50 Sunday Roast Review

The Loveable Rogue, a gastropub on Great Western Road in Glasgow, has been named one of the Top 50 best Sunday roasts in the UK by The Good Food Guide's 2024 annual awards. Opened in 2020 by chef Joe Lazzerini and his wife Amalia, the restaurant serves high-quality, locally sourced Scottish comfort food in a relaxed setting.

Sunday Roast Experience

On a recent visit, I opted for the two-course Sunday roast deal at £35 per person. The menu includes starters like broccoli velouté with red pepper pesto and beetroot goats cheese salad, but I skipped these to save room for the main event.

The roast dinner features Speyside beef, Yorkshire puddings, beef fat garlic roasties, brisket mac 'n' cheese, honey root veg, vegetable ecrasé, and red wine gravy. The beef and gravy arrived on individual plates, while the sides were presented on a sharing board. Between two people, we received enormous Yorkshire puddings, bowls of roast potatoes, mac and cheese, a veg medley, carrots, and broccoli.

Highlights and Critiques

The standout elements were the massive Yorkshire puddings, comparable in size to a broccoli head, and the rich red wine gravy that tied the flavours together. The mac and cheese was a welcome addition, though the brisket flavour was subtle. However, the beef portion felt modest—only a couple of slices—which was disappointing for a roast dinner where meat is central. The sharing board aesthetic is appealing, but I prefer having everything on one plate for better value.

Value and Conclusion

For £35 for two courses, plus a drink at around £40 total, the meal offers decent value. The warm sticky date pudding with butterscotch sauce and ice cream was a delightful dessert. While not the best roast I've had in Glasgow, The Loveable Rogue provides a hearty, enjoyable Sunday dinner. The restaurant also offers a Tuesday Date Night Special with steak or mussels for £12, which I plan to try next.
