Large queues were spotted on Lord Street in Liverpool city centre this morning as chicken restaurant Wingstop celebrated National Wing Day by giving away 20,000 free wings across the UK and Ireland. The offer, with no purchase necessary, was available to the first 100 guests through the doors at participating locations.
Top wing-loving communities chosen
Rather than picking locations at random, Wingstop analysed where fans order the most wings across the nation to uncover the country's biggest wing-loving communities. Liverpool's Lord Street location was one of the top 20 sites.
The fast food chain's first Liverpool site launched in the city centre on Monday, April 14, 2025, drawing hundreds of customers queuing for hours in advance. On that occasion, barriers and security were put in place outside the Lord Street restaurant, with some customers camping out from as early as 3am.
Doors open at 11am
Doors opened for today's giveaway at 11am, with queues forming ahead of time. Mansoor Ghaznavi, 21, and Sairy Sapkota, 22, decided to swing by closer to the opening instead of waiting earlier.
Sairy told the ECHO: "I actually came here at 9am but no one was here. I went shopping then my friend messaged me saying people were gathering and I came back."
Mansoor said: "There was no line before my meeting but when I came back I saw people so I decided to queue up. I love Wingstop."
First in line
Marcia Iles Hunt, 15, was one of the first customers in line, waiting almost an hour before doors opened. She told the ECHO: "I was coming down anyway and I like free chicken."
Chris Sherriff, CEO at Wingstop UKI, said: "National Wing Day is the perfect moment for us to connect with our community. Nobody loves wings like our fans, so we looked at where the obsession runs deepest and decided those communities deserved something back. Giving away 20,000 wings is our way of celebrating the people who have made Wingstop what it is. Thank you!"
Other Liverpool locations
The chain's newest Merseyside location opened in Speke's New Mersey Retail Park on Friday, April 24. Their second site had previously opened on Edge Lane's Liverpool Shopping Park on Monday, September 29 last year.
