Jessie Wallace, known for her iconic role as Kat Slater on EastEnders, has a grown-up daughter whose resemblance to her is uncanny. The 54-year-old actress has been a staple on the BBC soap since 2000, when the Slater family first arrived on Albert Square.
Kat Slater's Dramatic Storylines
From a harrowing sexual abuse storyline to the legendary "You ain't my mother" scene revealing Zoe Slater (Michelle Ryan) as her daughter, Kat's time in Walford has been full of drama. Her marriage to Alfie Moon (Shane Richie) has been turbulent, with the couple marrying three times. They first tied the knot on Christmas Day 2003 before splitting, reconciled in 2014, divorced six years later, and remarried in 2025. They now run The Queen Vic pub together.
Jessie's Early Life and Career
Born Karen Jane Wallace in Enfield in 1971, Jessie's father James was a telecommunications engineer, and her mother Annette worked as a secretary. After school, she trained as a makeup artist at the College of North East London in Tottenham and spent two years at the Royal Shakespeare Company. Her stage name, Jessie Wallace, is a tribute to her late grandmother. She graduated from The Poor School in 1999 and worked in a local pub in Essex while auditioning. Her first TV role was in The Bill as PC Karen Lace in 1999, before making her EastEnders debut in September 2000.
Comebacks and Spin-offs
After a five-year run, Jessie left EastEnders but returned in 2010 alongside Shane Richie. The duo became one of the soap's most iconic couples. In 2015, they temporarily left for the spin-off series Redwater, which explored Kat and Alfie's past. They left again in 2016, but Jessie made a permanent return in 2018 and has stayed since, with Shane eventually returning full-time. Jessie has also starred in Wild at Heart, Miss Marie Lloyd, and The Road to Coronation Street.
Romantic Life and Family
Jessie's romantic life has often made headlines. She had a three-year romance with Paul Whitworth, a brief fling with Andy Burton, and a relationship with policeman Dave Morgan, with whom she welcomed daughter Tallulah Lilac in November 2004. They parted ways not long after. Last year, Jessie shared a rare photo of Tallulah on Instagram for her 21st birthday, captioning it: "Happy 21st, my beautiful lulabalulah." Followers were stunned by their resemblance. Michelle Collins commented: "Mothers/daughters beautiful xxx," and Patsy Palmer added: "Beautiful like her mumma."
In August 2011, Jessie called off her wedding to ex-fiancé Vince Morse on the day after discovering he had sent texts to an old flame. Vince told the Sunday Mirror: "The wedding planner rang me and said, 'Jessie's called, she says it's off'. I knew she wouldn't change her mind. She trusted me implicitly, and I utterly betrayed her. I'm so ashamed." From 2012, she dated Tim Arnold for four years. Jessie is now engaged to carpenter Justin Gallwey, with the pair announcing their engagement in February 2023.
EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday on BBC One and iPlayer.
