The Davenport Arms, a historic pub on Chester Road in Woodford, Stockport, offers two expansive beer gardens overlooking fields, a cricket pitch, and livestock, making it a prime destination for sunny days. Acquired by Robinsons Brewery in the 1920s, the pub was run by the Hallworth family for 91 years before new owners, the Bromleys, took over in 2023.
A Pub With a Gruesome Past
Locally known as 'Thief's Neck', the pub's name stems from its 18th-century origins as part of the Capesthorne Estate. The Davenport family, as hereditary foresters to the King, had the power to hang poachers without trial. This history is reflected in the pub's crest, which depicts a serf's head with a rope around its neck, still visible outside the building today.
Two Beer Gardens for Summer Enjoyment
The pub features a front beer garden with festoon lighting and benches surrounded by flowers, and a larger rear garden with partial cover, leading to a spacious area overlooking the countryside. During the World Cup, the back garden has been buzzing with fans watching England matches, with tickets priced at £10 per person for the semi-final.
Food and Drink Offerings
Guests can enjoy a range of Robinsons beers, wines, prosecco, and cocktails, alongside an extensive food menu. Classics include beer-battered haddock, steak and Robinsons ale pie, and summer salads like Caesar salad with crisp romaine lettuce, herb croutons, crispy bacon, soft egg, anchovies, parmesan, and Caesar dressing.
Match Day Arrangements
On match days, the main kitchen closes at 4:45pm, with a BBQ outside from 5pm, an outside bar, and live music from 5:30pm to 7:30pm. The event is over 18s only after 5pm.
