Fiona Bruce appeared on Monday night's The One Show to speak about the latest series of Fake or Fortune with Phillip Mould. The 62-year-old presenter shared an emotional moment viewers will see in this series.
‘I Actually Cried in the Programme’
She commented: “The picture that's coming up this week has just got an incredible human story behind it. I actually cried in the programme, which I am embarrassed about.
“I knew, as soon as tears came to my eyes, I could see the camera closing in. It's really, really touching.”
As Alex Jones interjected to say people like seeing a softer side of her, Phillip Mould chimed in to explain they are dealing with a 'difficult' artist as their work is often faked.
Real-Life Faker Interviewed
He commented: “For one of the first times, we interviewed a real-life faker on the programme, John Myatt. He charmingly takes us into the dark side.”
While Fiona explained that John Myatt no longer does fake work and hasn't for a long time, he still creates paintings in the style of artists that people desire, although now makes it clear it's been created by him.
Science of Authentication
When speaking about the science behind working out whether something is fake or genuine, Phillip highlighted its importance.
He added: “Getting to look into the paint, I mean, there was a scene in last week's programme which we actually burrowed into the surfaces and you saw, which looked a bit like a nougat bar, and you saw the particular paint that Katherine Read used.
“We compared it with another, and it was like art speaking to you in a totally different way because you're not looking at the painting, you're looking into it and through it and I found it captivating, and ultimately it was convincing. We proved that it was Katherine Read, by looking into the paint.”
This Week's Episode
This week, the programme will see Fiona and Philip try to uncover the truth about two paintings. A synopsis reads: “Fiona Bruce and Philip Mould investigate a painting thought to be by the French artist André Derain that belonged to Marianne Kewan - a former Kindertransport child who escaped Nazi Germany.
“Lawyer Peter Reynolds is determined to authenticate the painting so it can be sold as part of the late Marianne's estate and generate hundreds of thousands for charity in her name.”
