British sprinter CJ Ujah, a world relay gold medallist, is among 10 suspects charged with conspiracy to defraud in connection with an alleged cryptocurrency scam. The charges follow an investigation by the Eastern Region Special Operations Unit across Kent, Essex and London.
Police allege the suspects were part of an organised crime group that tricked victims into sharing security details, including seed phrases, before stealing funds from their crypto wallets. One victim is said to have lost more than £300,000.
Ujah, 32, was granted bail until a hearing at Chelmsford Crown Court on 28 May. He won 4x100m relay gold at the 2017 world championships and the Diamond League title that same year. In 2022 he served a 22-month doping ban after testing positive for Ostarine and S-23 at the Tokyo Olympics, though he was cleared of intentional doping.
Also charged is Brandon Mingeli, who represented Great Britain in the 100m at the 2021 European Under-23 Championships. He has been remanded in custody until the next court date.
