True crime documentary series Murder Trial returns this week with two new episodes, offering unprecedented access to a murder case that shook a community. The episodes, available on BBC iPlayer from August 11 and airing on BBC Two at 9pm on August 12, focus on the death of Brian Low.
A Death Initially Treated as Non-Suspicious
In February 2024, Brian Low was found dead by a fellow dog walker. His death was initially treated as non-suspicious, but days later, police discovered he had been shot, leading to the arrest of ex-colleague David Campbell.
The official synopsis states: "Guilty or not guilty? Murder Trial, returns to the Scottish High Courts with the case of a man found dead in the middle of the countryside, with no witnesses, no forensics linking a suspect to the deceased and an accused man who the prosecution say has meticulously covered his tracks."
Exclusive Clip Reveals Key Witness Evidence
An exclusive clip shows witness Calum McDiarmid giving evidence in court. He describes seeing a cyclist riding at high speed through his farm, dressed in black with a hood up, and carrying a rucksack with something sticking out that he thought could be a gun.
McDiarmid told the court: "All of a sudden coming downhill, a bicycle came flying through between us." He added, "I shouted at them to stop and they didn't stop so I proceeded to chase after the bike thinking I was a good runner."
Prosecution's Circumstantial Case
The prosecution argues that David Campbell was "in that particular area looking for Brian Low," and they lead a circumstantial case, attempting to link multiple strands of evidence to a decades-old feud between victim and accused, suggesting pre-meditated murder.
With no direct forensics, the defence's role is to expose flaws in the evidence, and the trial paints a picture of a "small community ripped apart by old grudges and secrets surfacing in the wake of a killing."
