A 4% increase to Ofgem's energy price cap takes effect on Thursday, October 1, as experts warn household bills could rise by almost another £300 from January. The change means the average household in England, Scotland and Wales paying by direct debit for gas and electricity now faces a bill of £1,723 a year, up £5 a month or £60 a year if sustained over 12 months.
Further Price Rises Predicted
Cornwall Insight predicts the cap will rise by a further 16% to £1,999 a year on January 1, an increase of £276 on the level between October and December and the biggest rise since January 2023. Campaigners have urged the Government to make plans now to support all households with energy costs this winter because of the severity of forecast bill hikes.
Cardiff Drug Dealer Jailed
A drug dealer who posed as a Deliveroo rider to conceal his criminal activities has been jailed after police caught him carrying cocaine and cannabis in Cardiff. Nahro Gharib, 25, of Cyncoed, was stopped by officers from South Wales Police in Gold Street, Adamsdown, after they spotted him making an exchange that appeared to have nothing to do with food deliveries.
Footage from the incident shows Gharib dressed entirely in black, with the distinctive branded turquoise delivery bag strapped to his back. As officers approached, Gharib appeared visibly nervous and attempted to reassure them his electric bike was legal. He could be heard telling officers: "It's a legal bike, swear to God."
