Urgent US Baby Food Recall Over Potentially Toxic Substance

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has initiated an urgent recall for a specific lot of baby food due to elevated levels of patulin, a naturally occurring toxic substance. The recall targets Initiative Foods' Tippy Toes brand Apple Pear Banana Fruit baby food puree, with potential health risks including immune suppression and nerve damage.

Details of the Recalled Product

The affected product is identified by a best by date of July 17, 2026, and a package code INIA0120 printed on the bottom of each plastic tube. Each package contains two containers of puree and is typically sold for approximately $1.99. The recall was prompted after FDA sampling under the Total Diet Study revealed patulin levels higher than normal for such products.

Patulin is a mycotoxin produced by molds that can grow in various fruits, such as apples. Long-term exposure through ingestion may lead to adverse health effects, including headaches, fever, nausea, and more severe issues like immune suppression and nerve damage.

Consumers who possess the product with the specified expiration date are advised to:

  • Discontinue use immediately.
  • Dispose of the product or return it to the place of purchase for a refund.
  • Contact a healthcare provider if health concerns arise after consumption.

Retailers have been instructed to check their inventory and shelves, removing the affected lot from sale or distribution promptly.
