Wheelie bins frequently attract flies, mainly because of the food waste they contain. Once flies settle, they lay eggs that can hatch into maggots within 24 hours. The problem tends to worsen in warmer weather, especially when bins are not cleaned regularly. Although maggots are generally harmless to humans, they are unpleasant, and most people prefer to keep them away from their homes.
One simple method uses two common kitchen cupboard staples, avoiding the need for costly or potentially harmful chemical products, according to the Liverpool Echo.
Expert shares spice trick on TikTok
Home DIY specialist Ken Long shared the tip on TikTok. He advised: "Keep flies and maggots out of your garbage can. Sprinkle some cayenne pepper and cinnamon at the bottom of your garbage can."
Explaining the reasoning, Ken added: "The capsaicin [chili pepper extract] and cayenne pepper irritates the fly's senses and they hate the smell of cinnamon."
"This will keep flies away from your garbage and keep them from laying eggs, so you don't have to deal with maggots."
Precautions when using cayenne pepper
Care is needed when handling cayenne pepper, especially indoors, because its strong aroma may cause sneezing or eye irritation in some people. When sprinkling it in the bin, it is important to avoid creating dust clouds that could irritate bin collectors' eyes. It may be sensible to place the spice inside the wheelie bin liner and seal it tightly on collection days to prevent spillage.
Other ways to keep bins fly-free
Additional methods include washing bins regularly with hot, soapy water, or using a mild bleach solution or vinegar to destroy eggs or larvae. Using bin liners and securing bags tightly helps minimise spillages that attract flies. Bins should not be overfilled so the lid closes properly, and any damaged lids should be repaired or replaced promptly.
Removing liquids from food before disposal and wrapping moist waste, such as tea bags and fruit peelings, in newspaper or damp towels can also help. Avoiding leaving waste out for long periods, especially in hot weather, reduces moisture that draws flies, and bins should be emptied if they become too full.
