Two bleach-free ways to banish brown toilet stains for good
Two bleach-free ways to banish brown toilet stains for good

Cleaning expert Lynsey Crombie, known as Lynsey Queen of Clean, has shared two "really quick ways" to permanently remove brown toilet marks without using any chemicals. The stains, she says, are not what most people assume but are caused by limescale and hard water build-up.

Citric acid method

The first approach involves using citric acid, which Lynsey describes as a "go-to to break down that heavy limescale." If the build-up is "really, really bad," she advises pouring an entire 250g box down the toilet for optimal results.

She recommends leaving it "overnight to work," and by morning the limescale should have "broken down," so you can "rinse the toilet and it'll disappear."

Lynsey highlighted "the problem with bleach," noting that while the stain initially appears to vanish, it "comes back." In contrast, she reassured viewers: "Citric acid will break it down and stop it from coming back." Dri-Pak Citric Acid is available on Ocado for £2.30.

Toilet pumice stone removers

The second method uses toilet pumice stone removers, which Lynsey compares to "removing hard skin off our feet" but are "designed specifically for loos."

She explained: "Once you've used them, give them a really good wash with some antibacterial washing up liquid, let them dry, and then just keep them in a sealed bag like I've done here so you can reuse them."

If the limescale is "pretty bad," she advises wearing a rubber glove, poking the stone down, and scraping it away. The stones are "non-scratch and non-abrasive," so they won't harm the toilet while completing the task effectively.

"It works so so well," she enthused, adding that you can "have your hand down there for a minute" and once finished, the limescale will be eliminated for good. Lynsey advises storing the stones hygienically given they have been used in the toilet, but insists it is definitely worth trying.

A pair of pumice stone toilet cleaners can be bought from B&Q for £6.99, and they can be used repeatedly.
