Supermarket wine aisles are no longer just for budget buys. With top wine buyers now working for major retailers, the quality on offer has soared, making it easier than ever to find excellent bottles without breaking the bank. Social media influencers like Lucy Hitchcock (@Partnerinwineuk) and Hannah Crosbie have helped strip away the snobbery, driving demand for affordable, high-quality wines.
Sommeliers and experts have shared their top picks for summer 2026. Libby Brodie, wine consultant, notes that supermarkets have invested in their wine buyers and producer relationships, leading to a wider variety and better value. Sinead Murdoch, sommelier and co-founder of Tasca, adds that growing competition is raising the standard of supermarket wines.
Among the recommendations is an Albariño from M&S, described by expert Brook as 'zesty, with a touch of apricot, lime and even a salty edge', perfect with seafood. For barbecues, a South African red blend predominantly Pinotage is suggested, smooth, fruity and a little smoky, best served chilled for 20 minutes alongside grilled meats.
For rosé lovers, a dry Greek rosé from Waitrose offers a fragrant, zesty twist with citrus, peach, cherry and a hint of rose, priced under £10. Another option is an elegant Provence rosé blending seven grapes, described as a 'silky-smooth wine bursting with raspberry, peach, citrus and a hint of rosemary', ideal as a Whispering Angel alternative.
Portuguese vinho verde is a standout for summer, with two recommendations: a 10% ABV bottle that is aromatic, zesty and slightly spritzy, perfect for warm days. English sparkling wine from Sussex is also praised by Murdoch for its 'racy lemon and green apple skin notes balanced by raspberries and strawberries', making it a great barbecue aperitif.
