A TikToker has compared salmon fillets from Lidl, Tesco, and M&S, and the results were surprising. Despite significant price differences, the taste was indistinguishable.

Nourished By Yasmin, who shares healthy meal ideas and supermarket taste tests, decided to test whether the price difference in salmon fillets reflects a difference in quality. She compared the most premium option from M&S, a mid-range option from Tesco, and the budget-friendly choice from Lidl.
The M&S Caledonian Gold Responsibly Sourced Salmon Fillets were the most expensive at £4.95 for two portions, sourced exclusively from Scottish farms. Yasmin noted they had the greatest marbling, suggesting high omega-3 levels and a smooth texture, and felt the firmest with sturdy packaging.
The Taste Test
The Tesco fillets, responsibly sourced from Norway and Scotland at £4 for two pieces, became softer after rinsing. The Lidl fillets, at £3.89 for two, were the widest but flattest of the three and also lost firmness after rinsing.
After seasoning all three identically with olive oil, oregano, salt, and pepper, and baking them, Yasmin confessed: "I can't tell the difference." She also noted that all salmon must meet UK food standards, but evidence suggested M&S has higher animal welfare standards.
