A TikToker has conducted a supermarket taste test comparing salmon fillets from Lidl, Tesco, and M&S, reaching a surprising conclusion that has sparked debate among viewers.
Nourished By Yasmin, known for sharing healthy recipes and supermarket comparisons, set out to determine if the significant price differences between the three retailers' salmon fillets correspond to any genuine quality or taste variations.
The Price and Quality Question
Salmon is a popular choice for a quick, healthy meal, but prices can vary considerably depending on the supermarket. The question arises: does a higher price automatically indicate better quality?
To find out, Yasmin compared three tiers of supermarkets, starting with the most premium option, M&S. The Marks and Spencer Caledonian Gold Responsibly Sourced Salmon Fillets were priced at £4.95 for two pieces, sourced exclusively from their Scottish farms. Yasmin observed that these fillets displayed the most marbling, suggesting high omega-3 content and a rich, buttery texture. They also felt the firmest and had the strongest packaging.
Mid-Range and Budget Options
The mid-range option from Tesco, also responsibly sourced from Norway and Scotland, retailed at £4 for a two-pack. When rinsed with cold water and lemon, the Tesco fillets turned slightly mushy, unlike the M&S fillets which held their shape.
The most budget-friendly option came from Lidl, priced at £3.89 for a two-pack. Yasmin remarked that these were the 'widest but flattest' of the bunch and, like the Tesco fillets, lost some firmness after rinsing.
The Taste Test Verdict
All fillets were seasoned identically with olive oil, oregano, salt, and pepper, then baked in the oven. Yasmin noted that all salmon sold in the UK must meet food standards regulations, but her research suggested the M&S fillets have a 'higher standard' for their fish.
However, upon tasting, she confessed, "I can't tell the difference." The video's comments section saw viewers sharing their own preferences, with one writing, "I don't like the M&S salmon, looks worse than Tesco and Lidl to me. Lidl all the way." Another said, "You forgot the best one - the Sainsbury's one!" and a third commented, "Nothing compares to wild salmon."
