A TikToker has compared salmon fillets from three different supermarkets and found that, despite significant price differences, they all taste the same.
Price and Quality Comparison
The influencer, known as Nourished By Yasmin, tested fillets from M&S, Tesco, and Lidl. The M&S Caledonian Gold salmon was the most expensive at £4.95 for two pieces, sourced exclusively from Scottish farms. Yasmin noted it had the most marbling, indicating high omega-3 content and a rich, buttery texture, and felt the firmest with the sturdiest packaging.
Tesco's responsibly sourced fillets from Norway and Scotland cost £4 for a two-pack. After rinsing with cold water and lemon, Yasmin observed they became slightly mushy, unlike the M&S ones which kept their shape. Lidl's salmon was the most affordable at £3.89, described as the 'widest but flattest' of the three, and also lost some firmness after rinsing.
The Taste Test
All fillets were coated in olive oil, oregano, salt, and pepper, then baked in the oven. Yasmin noted that all salmon sold in the UK must meet food standards and, after research, claimed M&S fillets have a 'higher standard' for animal welfare. However, upon tasting, she confessed: "I can't tell the difference."
