An upscale Sydney restaurant has made shocking allegations against a customer, accusing him of using his own armpit hair to deliberately contaminate his meal in an apparent attempt to evade payment for a substantial dining bill. Pony Dining, located in the historic Rocks precinct, has released disturbing CCTV footage of the incident, which occurred on Wednesday night, after a family of six demanded a refund and departed without settling most of their $600 tab.
CCTV Footage Reveals Disturbing Act
The video, shared online by the restaurant, shows a man dressed in a white polo shirt and beige pants glancing over his shoulder before appearing to reach into his armpit and extract strands of hair. He then seems to place the freshly plucked hairs onto the remains of a steak meal, while a young girl at the same table is seen licking her plate. According to the restaurant, the man later complained to staff about finding hair in their meals, leading the group to walk out without paying for the majority of their bill.
Restaurant's Response and Police Involvement
In a statement accompanying the footage, Pony Dining explained, "We don't usually share content like this. This footage shows an incident which occurred in our venue. After the meal was served, the guest later raised a complaint regarding a hair in their meal and declined payment for all the food." The restaurant manager added that during the interaction, their team experienced "inappropriate and unacceptable behaviour."
The manager described serving the family a "wonderful dinner," with orders including some of the venue's most expensive items, such as a tomahawk steak priced up to $140 depending on market value. "Everything was very clean, they had a beautiful table," the manager told news.com.au. Suspicion arose when staff noticed the group acting "very weird," prompting a review of the CCTV.
Authorities were contacted, but initially, police advised it was a civil matter due to lack of footage at the time. The group eventually paid for their drinks before leaving. The restaurant has since reported the diner to the authorities and issued a warning to other hospitality businesses about such fraudulent practices.
Public Outrage and Industry Support
The footage has sparked widespread shock and condemnation among Australians, with many branding the act as "disrespectful and repulsive." Social media comments flooded in, with one user stating, "Next-level disrespect from that person," while another remarked, "What a wonderful example for his children. Stay home and eat toast." A third expressed, "Probably the grossest thing I have seen in a long time."
Some called for the patron to be named and shamed, and hospitality workers shared their own horror stories. One restaurant manager nearby commented, "I'm a restaurant manager just next to you guys, and they did the exact same thing to me. They 'found a small rock' in their food and created a huge scene, then left without paying the full bill."
Pony Dining later thanked the public for their overwhelming support, writing, "We understand this isn't pleasant to watch. We appreciate the kind messages and support for our team. Hospitality can be tough, and we hope all venues feel empowered to protect their teams."
