Sky and Plusnet are both offering price cuts and freebies on their fastest 900Mbps fibre broadband packages this month. Sky's Full Fibre Gigafast, usually £31, is now reduced to £29, saving £48 over the 24-month term. Sky will also pay customers up to £200 bill credit if they switch, which could help those stuck in existing contracts at higher prices avoid early exit fees.
Sky's Gigafast Details
According to Sky, customers on its 900Mbps Gigafast plan can download an HD TV programme in just 14 seconds. However, it's worth considering if 900Mbps is really needed, as most people will manage with around 100Mbps. Faster options are more suited to busy households with several connections running simultaneously, including online gaming and 4K streaming.
Shoppers who don't need ultra-fast speeds could keep costs down with Sky's £24 Full Fibre 100 or £27 Full Fibre 500, the latter of which is said to be the 'lowest price' ever for this plan. There's no activation fee with any of these plans, but it's worth checking available speeds with Sky's postcode checker, as they can vary by location.
Plusnet's Offer
Plusnet is also cutting prices and dishing out freebies, offering a £50 reward card to spend online or in-store at countless retailers with its Full Fibre 900 plan. However, this option comes in higher than Sky's discounted offering at £33.99 monthly plus £20 upfront. Plusnet also falls short in its minimum speed guarantee, offering 500Mbps compared to Sky's 600Mbps.
As with most broadband providers, both Sky and Plusnet are expected to increase their prices each April, including for customers tied into a contract. Sky states its prices 'may change' during the minimum term, but does not announce its changes until closer to the time. Earlier this year, it hit most customers with a £3 monthly increase, which is lower than the £4 increase from major providers including Plusnet and Virgin Media.
Future Price Rises
Plusnet has already confirmed its Full Fibre 900 customers will see their bills rise to £37.99 from March 2027 and £41.99 from March 2028. For those in eligible areas, Virgin's Gig1 Fibre Broadband offers speeds up to 1,130Mbps with a minimum speed guarantee of 565Mbps, at £27.99. However, Gig1 customers should remember their bills will rise to £31.99 from April 2027 and £35.99 from April 2028.
With all this in mind, Sky appears to be the strongest choice both in terms of speed and overall value. Sky's Full Fibre Gigafast comes in £4.99 cheaper than Plusnet's Full Fibre 900 based on today's prices and provides a faster minimum speed guarantee. Looking further ahead, Sky is expected to hit a high of £35 over the next two years, compared to £41.99 with Plusnet, although Sky's future rates are yet to be confirmed. That said, customers in eligible areas should consider Virgin's £27.99 Gig1 Fibre Broadband as this ends up faster and more affordable than both Sky and Plusnet – even after two annual price rises.
