Shatner blasts Aldi's 'accounting department' in overpayment row

William Shatner has criticised Aldi's accounting department after a Radio Essex presenter accused the supermarket of sending an "intimidating letter" to his son. In an X post, the Captain Kirk actor accused the shop's accounting team of not knowing how to count.

Presenter's complaint over Aldi letter

Radio Essex presenter Chris Brooks had shared a letter written by Aldi to his son, a former employee. He claimed they "threatened" his son with debt recovery after overpaying him.

Brooks wrote: "Hey @AldiUK this letter you’ve sent my son is intimidating. You never mentioned to him that he was over paid, threatening him with debt recovery action and asking for immediate payment (on a date 2 weeks before you’ve even sent the letter) is awful. You made the mistake not him."

In the letter, Aldi requested that Brooks' son pay back £97.64, as they realised they had overpaid him after processing his final pay check. The supermarket responded: "We're sorry to see this, Chris."

Shatner's response and fan reactions

Shatner then waded in writing: "Hey @aldiuk tell your CEO that he should be looking into his accounting department as the department obviously does not how to count or use a calendar. While he’s at it; he should figure out how much the company spent sending this letter. I’m sure it more than £97!"

Brooks added that it was "surreal" that Shatner had gotten involved. He shared that he had no issue with repaying the money, but disliked the letter, which he said had been sent "to a young lad, just starting at work". Aldi UK added that it was sorry for concern caused by the letter and said they would not be pursuing payment from Brooks.

Fans of Shatner were in hysterics over his post. One wrote: "I'm never leaving this platform. Captain Kirk just rebuked Aldi. I'm in pieces." But others were more concerned with how Shatner thought sending a letter could cost £97.

"Yeah I'm sure it costs more than 97 quid for an A4 piece of paper and a 1st class stamp," wrote one X user. Another said: "Tell me you never posted a letter without telling me you never posted a letter."

Shatner's career and spaceflight

Shatner is best known for playing Captain James T. Kirk in Star Trek from 1966 to 1994. He has also appeared in films such as Miss Congeniality and won both an Emmy and Golden Globe for his role in Boston Legal.

Since playing space traveller Kirk on Star Trek, Shatner has added 'astronaut' to his CV too. In 2021, he became the oldest person to fly in space, as a passenger on Blue Origin NS-18.
