BBC Morning Live consumer expert Harry Kind has shared valuable advice on how to save significant amounts of money on tumble dryer usage, echoing previous warnings from Martin Lewis about the appliance being a 'demon appliance' due to its high energy consumption. With rainy weather forcing many to rely on tumble dryers, Kind offered practical tips to reduce costs.
Heat Pump Tumble Dryers: The Key to Savings
Kind explained that the type of tumble dryer purchased makes a substantial difference. He highlighted that heat pump tumble dryers cost as little as 33p per cycle, compared to 83p for condenser models. Over a year, using a heat pump dryer three times a week saves £78, and over a 20-year lifespan, the total saving reaches £1,560. Despite a higher upfront cost (the cheapest heat pump model is under £250), the long-term energy savings outweigh the initial investment.
Eco Modes and Efficient Usage
Kind emphasized that eco modes on appliances like dishwashers and washing machines can reduce energy consumption by 30-40%. For dishwashers, Which? found that standard cycles cost £71 annually, while eco programs cost £52.13, saving nearly £20. He advised experimenting with settings, noting that eco modes take longer but use less energy and lower temperatures.
Additional Tips for Tumble Dryer Efficiency
- Don't overfill: Keep the drum 80% full or less to ensure proper tumbling and avoid hot spots.
- Separate fabrics: Dry cotton and synthetics separately as they dry at different rates.
- Clean the lint filter: After each use to maintain efficiency.
- Wash less frequently: Clothes last longer, and less washing reduces energy use.
- Check energy tariffs: Run appliances during cheaper off-peak hours if possible.
Kind concluded that even small changes can lead to substantial savings, especially amid ongoing cost-of-living pressures. By choosing the right appliance and using it wisely, households can cut energy bills significantly.
