A food critic on TikTok has compared eight salmon fillets from various supermarkets, with prices ranging from £2.99 to £10, to see if cost reflects quality. The results surprised her, as budget options performed well against premium ones.
Budget Salmon Options
Becca, a Gloucestershire-based food critic with over 633,000 followers, started with Aldi's Essential salmon at £2.99. She noted the pieces were 'very skinny' but still a decent portion. After tasting, she praised its flaky, buttery texture and meaty flavour, scoring it 8.5 out of 10.
She then tried Sainsbury's Stanford Street Co fillets at £3.49, which she found 'tasteless' compared to Aldi's. Aldi's standard salmon at £3.59 scored 9.5 out of 10.
Mid-Range Salmon Fillets
In the mid-range, Sainsbury's standard salmon at £4.95 was again 'tasteless', scoring just 5 out of 10. M&S Caledonian Gold salmon, also £4.95, impressed her greatly, drawing comparisons to a steak and earning a perfect 10 out of 10.
Tesco's salmon at £5.15 had a 'gamy taste' and scored only 4 out of 10.
Premium Salmon Fillets
For the most expensive options, Becca tried Russell's Organic salmon from Ocado at £9.25, which had a 'real earthy flavour' and scored 9 out of 10. Tesco Finest Sockeye Salmon at £9.45, the only wild-caught option, also scored 9 out of 10.
The priciest was Loch Fyne salmon at £10 from Ocado, which was smoked. Becca said it was 'unlike any of the others' and '100% worth the money', scoring it 10 out of 10.
