Rare 1881 Penny Could Make You a Millionaire

All Brits are being urged to check their spare change for a special penny that could be worth hundreds of pounds—and possibly even turn you into a millionaire. According to a coin collecting expert, an uncirculated version of the 1881 penny with the 'H' mark can sell for over £300.

The 1881 'H' Penny: A Hidden Treasure

The expert, known as @CoinCollectingWizard on Instagram, shared a video with his 37,100 followers explaining the value of this particular coin. He said: "Find this one penny and become a millionaire today, save this for your reference immediately."

The 'H' mark, located just below the date 1881, stands for the Heaton Mint, where around three million of these coins were produced. The obverse features the young head of Queen Victoria, often called "Bun Head."

"Lots of the old British predecimal pennies can hold a lot of value," the expert added. "Dates are super rare and worth a fortune, but people do find them from time to time."

How to Spot the Rare Coin

The expert emphasised that the 'H' mint mark is very small, so collectors need to look closely. He noted that coins from the 1880s have a slightly different design compared to more recent pennies from the 1900s.

While finding such an old coin in your change is unlikely, it is not impossible. You might discover one while sifting through your grandparents' old coin stash, which may have been passed down through generations.

Tips for Finding Rare Coins

  • Check your change: Look for commemorative, limited-edition designs or very old coins.
  • Coin roll hunting: Visit your local bank and buy unsearched coin rolls or boxes of pennies to sort through in bulk. Pay attention to key dates.
  • Know your stuff: Search for specific details like date, mintage, and mint marks. Lower mintage increases scarcity.
  • Speak to a professional: If unsure, consult an expert. Auction houses often sell rare coins, and eBay is also a popular platform for sales.

So, take a moment to check your penny stash—you might just find a coin that could change your life.
