Two popular designer fragrances have been urgently pulled from the shelves of a major UK discount chain over fears they contain a chemical deemed a "serious" risk to human fertility.
What Products Are Affected?
The recall involves Hello by Lionel Richie and Hot by United Colours of Benetton perfumes. Both items were sold exclusively through Savers Health and Beauty stores across the country. The action was announced on Thursday, 15 January 2026.
Customers are being strongly advised to stop using the products immediately and return them to any Savers store for a full refund, even without a receipt.
Why Have They Been Recalled?
The recall was triggered after tests revealed the perfumes contain butylphenyl methylpropional (BMHCA), a synthetic substance also widely known as lilial. This chemical is used to create a floral fragrance but has been subject to a major regulatory crackdown.
BMHCA is classified as toxic to reproductive health, meaning it poses a potential risk to unborn children. It is also known to cause skin sensitisation in some individuals, leading to allergic reactions.
Due to these significant health concerns, the ingredient was banned from use in all cosmetic products in both the UK and the European Union in March 2022. Its presence in any item now on sale is therefore illegal.
What Should Consumers Do Now?
Savers has initiated a full product recall and is cooperating with regulatory authorities. The chain is urging anyone who has purchased either of the affected perfumes to take the following steps:
- Cease use of the fragrance immediately.
- Return the product to your nearest Savers Health and Beauty store.
- You will be eligible for a complete refund.
This incident highlights the importance of post-market surveillance, even for ingredients that have been prohibited for several years. Consumers with concerns, particularly those who are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, are advised to follow the recall notice and dispose of the products safely via the return scheme.
