Oil stains vanish with 1 simple baking soda paste step
Oil stains vanish with simple baking soda paste step

Cleaning enthusiast Chantel Mila has shared a simple paste method using baking soda and washing up liquid that makes oil stains “disappear like magic,” working on both fresh and set-in marks before a normal wash cycle.

Oil-based stains are notoriously difficult to remove in the washing machine because they repel water and cling to porous fabric fibres. As oil oxidises, it turns sticky, embeds itself into the material, and can even begin to spread, making removal increasingly hard.

The two-ingredient paste

In a video, Mila said: “Here's how to remove tough oil stains from your clothes.” The method requires two common household items: washing up liquid and baking soda. The washing up liquid cuts through grease, while the baking soda absorbs oil from the fabric.

Begin by placing a plate behind the affected area, possibly inside the garment itself. Apply a small amount of washing up liquid to the stain, then dust generously with baking soda. Use a small bristled brush, such as a toothbrush, to combine the ingredients into a paste.

Leave for 10 minutes

Leave the paste to work for 10 minutes. Mila said: “The best thing is that this paste can be used on both old and new oil stains.” This includes freshly made stains on clothing that has not yet been washed. Follow up with a normal wash cycle.

If the baking soda clumps together, this indicates it is working properly. Baking soda also acts as a deodoriser.

Expert advice on rinsing

Appliance brand Bosch advised keeping the fabric dry and avoiding rinsing. Bosch explained: “Rinsing is one of the worst things you can do to an oil stain since oil repels water and will cling onto fibres when rinsed.”

Bosch recommended blotting the area with a clean, dry paper towel first. It said: “Before applying anything, blot out as much oil as you can with some kitchen roll or an absorbent cloth. Remember, don't rub, dab.”

Caution is advised when using baking soda on dark or boldly coloured garments, as it can produce a bleaching effect and cause discolouration.
