Nationwide Building Society has provided an update on its bonus payment scheme, leaving millions of customers anticipating whether they will receive another payout this year. The mutual society has previously distributed £100 payments through its Fairer Share programme for three consecutive years, with over four million customers benefiting from the latest round in 2025.
When Will the Announcement Be Made?
When questioned about the timeline for confirming another payment, a Nationwide spokesperson stated: "Nationwide aims to make a Fairer Share payment again this year, subject to financial performance and Board approval. Any announcement, including eligibility criteria and amount, will be made on 21 May at Nationwide's end-of-year financial results."
Potential Eligibility Criteria
While the final qualifying rules have yet to be confirmed, last year's criteria may offer clues. To receive the 2025 payment, members needed to hold a qualifying current account along with either a qualifying savings account or a mortgage. Specific account activity between January and March 2025 was also required. Full details are available on Nationwide's website.
Last year's payments were deposited into customers' current accounts between June 18 and July 4, appearing on statements as "Nationwide Fairer Share Payment."
Expert Opinion on Further Payments
Rachel Springall, finance expert at Moneyfactscompare.co.uk, commented on the likelihood of another round: "Nationwide have consistently offered the Fairer Share payment over the past three years, and they hope to do it again. However, it is all down to the performance of the mutual, so this is what members need to be aware of this year. It is also important that members check if they meet the terms to be eligible for the payment moving forward."
Potential Switching Incentives
Beyond the bonus payment, Nationwide may introduce a new switching offer. The building society recently ended a £175 switching deal in March 2026, available to those moving to a FlexDirect, FlexAccount, or FlexPlus account. Ms Springall noted: "It is entirely possible that Nationwide could bring out another free cash switching offer, a year ago they were offering £200 to switchers at the end of May, all the way until mid-July 2025."
Many banks currently run switching incentives: Barclays offers £200, HMRC pays £500, Santander provides £180, and First Direct offers £175.
