Motorway fuel costs 3p per mile more than UK average

Drivers topping up their petrol and diesel cars at motorway service stations are paying 3p per mile more to use the roads than the UK average, according to data from the RAC Fuel Watch. Motorists filling up their petrol tanks at motorway service stations should expect to pay 181.26p per litre, up to 20p per litre more than the UK average of 161.28p per litre elsewhere.

Petrol and diesel cost breakdown

When applied to an average 35mpg petrol vehicle, individuals filling up with petrol at motorway stations would be paying 24p per mile, compared to 21p elsewhere. Diesel owners are also affected, with costs at motorway service stations charging around 202.06p per litre compared to the UK average of 182.45p per litre. Using an average 43mpg diesel car, motorway service station customers will be paying 21p per mile, instead of 19p per mile for the UK average.

Why motorway fuel costs more

It is well-known that motorway service stations charge more for fuel than regular petrol and diesel pumps. Service stations have a captive audience and limited local competition, meaning customers generally pay the higher prices if they urgently need fuel. However, motorway service stations also face high operating costs, with most sites open for 24 hours.

Drivers' response and advice

Despite this, motorists have clearly had enough with the staggering cost of filling-up their vehicles. A previous poll of 13,775 respondents from the AA found that three-quarters (77%) believe the price of fuel at motorway service areas is "unacceptable". Jack Cousens, AA head of roads policy previously said: “Drivers could be forgiven for feeling held to ransom over the cost of fuel and food when they are readily available at a fraction of the cost a short distance away from the motorway.”

Motoring experts have urged road users to completely avoid motorway service station fuel pumps where absolutely necessary to avoid being ripped off. William Fletcher, CEO of Car.co.uk, stressed road users should budget for a long trip so they can dodge the sky-high fees. He previously said: “The difference in price between motorway services and regular forecourts is substantial. Unless it's an emergency, it's always worth planning ahead to fill up before you hit the motorway. Those extra few minutes can save you £10 or more on a single tank.”
