A Morrisons store in Whitefield has been handed a food hygiene rating of two out of five after health inspectors discovered 'major' pest issues, poor cleaning, and contamination risks. The inspection, carried out in June, led to a report detailing 'significant failures in basic cleansing and disinfection'.
Inspectors find widespread pest activity
During the visit, inspectors found rodent droppings in 'numerous' food production areas, indicating 'widespread pest activity and inadequate monitoring and control'. 'Large quantities' of rat droppings were also discovered in the warehouse area, along with a 'gnawed bag of flour' which 'confirmed contamination of food products'. 'Old mouse droppings' were found in multiple locations, including the café area.
Access points for pests, such as gaps and holes in external doors, were noted. Bury council acknowledged that pest control had been engaged but told Morrisons to 'thoroughly inspect' the premises and seal all gaps.
Deep clean ordered
An 'immediate and thorough' deep clean and disinfection of the entire premises was ordered. Further issues included 'inadequate' cleaning standards in 'several key areas', such as the fish preparation area, salad bar, bakery area, and the produce back-up chiller. 'Extensive accumulations of food debris' were found beneath equipment and shelves, indicating a 'prolonged lack of effective cleaning'.
The council concluded that the issues reflected a 'lack of effective oversight and follow-through' by store management.
Store responds
A Morrisons spokeswoman said: "As soon as we were made aware of the rating, we took immediate action to address and resolve the issues raised. We have now applied for a new rating following a visit from an Environmental Health Officer who was satisfied with the improvements we have made."
