Booking a hotel on your phone instead of a laptop can unlock exclusive mobile-only discounts of at least 10% on platforms like Booking.com, according to travel expert Graziano Gagliardi of Private Italy Tour.
Many travellers use a computer to research hotels because the larger screen makes it easier to compare rooms, photos, and reviews. However, some booking platforms allow hotels to offer exclusive prices to people using their mobile website or app.
How to find mobile-only rates
Gagliardi advises: “A laptop is excellent for researching a hotel, but it should not necessarily be the device you use to complete the booking. Once you have chosen your property and room, repeat the same search on your phone. Some hotels release mobile-only rates that will not appear during the desktop search, so this final check could reveal a lower price within seconds.”
Booking.com allows participating properties to provide discounts of at least 10% to travellers using either its app or mobile website. These offers are commonly identified with a “mobile-only price” label, but they are not available at every hotel or for every date.
Steps to compare prices correctly
Gagliardi recommends first finding the preferred hotel on a laptop and writing down the complete cost, rather than relying on the first nightly price displayed in the search results. Then, open the same platform on your smartphone, using the app as well as the mobile browser where possible. Enter identical dates, the same number of guests, and the same room type before comparing final totals.
He explains: “Do not compare two prices until you are certain they cover the same booking. One may be for a non-refundable room while the other includes free cancellation. Breakfast, city taxes, payment dates and room categories can also be different.”
Travellers should also check whether they are signed into an account on one device but not the other, as a loyalty or member discount could explain the price difference rather than the device itself. He adds: “Proceed far enough to see the final amount payable, but stop before confirming. A deal that initially appears £30 cheaper may lose its advantage once taxes or additional charges are included.”
Potential savings
For example, a three-night stay in Rome with a standard double room advertised at £180 per night on a laptop could carry a mobile-only reduction when viewed through the app. Even a 10% discount would reduce a £540 room bill by £54, provided the cancellation policy and inclusions remain identical.
The saving can become more significant for longer family bookings in destinations such as Florence, Venice, Milan, or the Amalfi Coast, where accommodation may represent one of the largest parts of the holiday budget. However, Gagliardi warns that using a phone does not guarantee the cheapest deal every time.
Other ways to save
The hotel’s direct price should not be overlooked. Even when it cannot beat an app’s headline rate, it may include breakfast, more flexible cancellation, a room upgrade, or free luggage storage. Travellers can also ring the hotel and ask whether it will match the price found elsewhere.
Gagliardi advises: “Take a screenshot showing the room, dates, booking conditions and total price before contacting the hotel. Rather than simply asking for a discount, explain the exact offer you have found and ask whether they can match it or provide an equivalent benefit. The cheapest-looking room is not always the best-value room. Saving £15 through an app may not be worthwhile if booking directly includes breakfast for two or allows you to cancel without a fee.”
Holidaymakers should make the comparison shortly before they are ready to book because hotel prices and availability can change quickly. Opening several searches hours apart may produce different results simply because demand has changed.
Gagliardi concludes: “Research on the larger screen if that feels easier, but never press the final payment button until you have repeated the search on your phone. It takes around a minute and could reveal a discount that was hidden from you on the laptop.”
