Adding a spoonful of butter to microwave rice can eliminate the unpleasant plasticky taste and create a rich, decadent flavour, according to food experts at Food Republic.
Microwave rice is a convenient option for bulking out a meal, with one packet serving two people and ready in minutes, unlike dry rice which takes longer to cook. However, the flavour can sometimes leave something to be desired.
Butter is the key ingredient
When the rice is finished cooking, stirring through a spoonful of butter adds a layer of decadent flavour. The experts note that while the butter may be invisible to the naked eye, the taste buds will notice the difference. Melted butter also ensures the rice is clump-free and deliciously moist.
A small amount goes a long way, and salted butter is recommended, though any type can be used.
Citrus juice as an alternative
Citrus juice can also enhance the flavour of microwave rice. The juice should be added right before serving, as freshly squeezed citrus fruits taste their brightest. A small squeeze is sufficient, with more added if needed.
