Manchester United have secured the signing of Tottenham Hotspur's highly-rated winger Tynan Thompson in a deal that could reach £8m. The 18-year-old, who scored 13 goals across the Under-18 and Under-21 levels last season, has moved to Old Trafford after growing frustrated with limited first-team opportunities at Spurs.
Deal structure and add-ons
The transfer includes an initial £4m fee, with a further £4m in performance-related add-ons. Tottenham have also negotiated a sell-on clause of between 15% and 20%, as well as a matching rights condition that could allow them to bring Thompson back to the club in the future.
Thompson made three appearances on the bench for Tottenham's first team during the 2025-26 campaign but was unable to break into the starting lineup. Sources close to Spurs have told PA that personal family circumstances, including a desire to relocate to the Manchester area, also influenced the decision.
Personal challenges and performance
The teenager had to cope with the unexpected death of his father last November. Despite this, he excelled on the pitch, scoring seven goals in seven UEFA Youth League games and contributing six assists across all age-group competitions.

Future prospects
Thompson is expected to join United's Under-21 setup initially, with a pathway to the first team under manager Erik ten Hag. The deal underscores United's commitment to acquiring young talent, while Tottenham retain a financial interest through the sell-on clause and matching rights.
