Lidl's own-brand cornflakes have been named the winner of a supermarket taste test, beating Kellogg's Corn Flakes on both flavour and value. Priced at 95p, the Lidl box was judged to match the branded cereal's taste and texture closely, offering a cheaper alternative at a time when the Kellogg's version costs £2.45 from Asda.
The test, carried out by journalist Mia O'Hare, compared own-brand cornflakes from Asda, Tesco, Marks and Spencer, Aldi and Lidl against Kellogg's. Each cereal was sampled both dry and with milk to assess its true flavour, with price and taste taken into account.
Rankings and Ratings
Asda's cornflakes, priced at £1.15, came last with a rating of 5/10. The cereal was described as less sweet and less crunchy than Kellogg's, with a dry texture that lacked flavour.
Tesco, Marks and Spencer and Aldi all scored 7/10. Tesco's cornflakes, at 95p, were found to be crispy and less dry than Asda's, while Marks and Spencer's version offered a balanced texture without being excessively hard. Aldi's cereal, also 95p, produced a satisfying crunch but lacked Kellogg's sweetness.
Winner and Value
Kellogg's Corn Flakes scored 9/10, praised for achieving a perfect balance between sweet and savoury with the right level of crunch. However, Lidl's cornflakes, also priced at 95p, were the only supermarket option to match Kellogg's in both appearance and flavour, earning a perfect 10/10 rating.
The Lidl cereal was noted for its darker colour, which reflected Kellogg's visual appearance, and for replicating the brand's taste and texture. At 95p, the test concluded there is little reason to choose the branded alternative on the next shop, making Lidl the champion for quality and affordability.
