Lidl's own-brand cornflakes have been named the winner of a taste test, beating Kellogg's iconic Corn Flakes on both flavour and value. The 95p cereal matched the branded version in appearance and taste, according to a comparison by Mia O'Hare for the Daily Express.
Supermarket versions compared
The test sampled cornflakes from Asda, Tesco, Lidl, Aldi and Marks and Spencer, checking them against Kellogg's for taste and price. The cereals were tested both dry and with milk to assess their genuine flavour.
Asda finished bottom of the rankings at £1.15. The cereal looked identical to those sold by Tesco, Marks and Spencer and Aldi, but had a distinctive taste, described as less sweet and less crunchy than Kellogg's, with a dry consistency. It scored 5/10.
Mid-table results
Tesco, Marks and Spencer and Aldi all scored 7/10. Tesco's cornflakes, at 95p, were crisp and less dry than Asda's, with a paler look. Marks and Spencer's version, also 95p, had a pleasant texture with a decent balance, less sugary than Kellogg's and remarkably similar to Tesco and Aldi's.
Aldi's cereal, at 95p, had a crisp texture with a satisfying snap in every mouthful, but lacked the sweetness of Kellogg's and had a slightly dry texture.
Kellogg's and the winner
Kellogg's Corn Flakes, at £2.45 from Asda, scored 9/10. The branded cereal achieved a balance between sweet and savoury with the right degree of crispness, and most supermarket alternatives failed to match its distinctive taste.
Lidl's cornflakes, at 95p, scored 10/10. The cereal was considerably darker than other supermarket alternatives, closely resembling Kellogg's visual appearance, and delivered an identical taste and texture to the branded version. The blend of quality and affordability made it the undisputed champion in the test.
