Kellogg's removes whole rice from Rice Krispies and Coco Pops

Kellogg's has removed whole rice grains from its Rice Krispies and Coco Pops cereals, switching to alternative flours after changing weather conditions disrupted global supply chains and grain availability.

Rice Krispies is now made with rice flour instead of whole rice. Coco Pops has moved from whole rice to a blend of rice flour and corn flour. The updated recipes also introduce wheat gluten into both products, making them unsuitable for people with coeliac disease or wheat allergies.

Allergen labelling changes

Previously, both cereals carried a "may contain gluten" advisory because of shared factory environments. With wheat gluten now a direct ingredient, wheat must be declared as a primary allergen on packaging and bolded in the ingredients list.

Kellogg's said updated boxes are entering retail channels with prominent on-pack labels alerting shoppers to the allergen change.

Reason for the reformulation

A spokeswoman for Kellogg's said: "We have updated the Rice Krispies and Coco Pops recipes, which are now made using corn flour and rice flour. This recent change helps us maintain consistent quality at a time when changing weather conditions are affecting the quality and availability of some of the rice and grains used in our cereals."

She added that the company approached the reformulation with "a lot of care and consideration", and that the updated recipes were evaluated for taste, appearance, and texture.

Nutritional status and sales context

Despite the ingredient swap, both products maintain their non-HFSS (not high in fat, salt, or sugar) status, contain no artificial colours, flavours, or sweeteners, and retain their previous levels of fibre, Vitamin D, and iron.

The change comes as The Grocer reported declining sales for Rice Krispies, with both volume and total value dropping ahead of its upcoming 2026 Top Products Survey. Kellogg's stated it is continuing to monitor consumer feedback as the new boxes roll out across retail shelves.
