Two popular hair growth serums sold via Amazon in the United States have been urgently recalled after safety regulators found they were not packaged securely enough to protect children. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall, citing a violation of the Poison Prevention Packaging Act.
What Products Are Affected?
The recall involves two distinct products: the Ruahouine Hair Growth Serum and the RootStim Beard Growth Serum 5% Minoxil. Both contain the active ingredient minoxidil. This medication, originally developed for high blood pressure in the 1970s and later approved for hair loss treatment, works by widening blood vessels to stimulate growth.
While effective and safe for adult use when applied topically, minoxidil poses a significant poisoning risk if swallowed. It can be toxic to small children, dogs, and cats, even in very small amounts, potentially leading to serious injury or death.
Scale and Details of the Recall
The CPSC stated that approximately 25,000 bottles of Ruahouine serum and about 16,900 units of the RootStim beard serum are affected, totalling nearly 42,000 products. The fault lies in the manufacturing process in China, where the products were incorrectly packaged without the legally required child-resistant bottles.
The Ruahouine serum was sold on Amazon between January 2025 and July 2025 for around $10 per bottle. The RootStim product was available from November 2024 through September 2025 at approximately $20 each. As of the announcement, both items were still listed for purchase.
What Should Consumers Do?
Authorities urge customers who have bought these products to immediately move them out of reach of children and pets. Fortunately, no injuries or deaths have been reported in connection with this recall.
The refund process differs slightly between the two brands:
- For Ruahouine Hair Growth Serum: Consumers must contact the company for instructions. They will be asked to pour the contents into the trash, photograph the empty bottle, and email the picture to receive a refund or replacement.
- For RootStim Beard Growth Serum: Buyers simply need to discard the product and contact the company to arrange for a new one, with no photograph required.
This is not the first packaging issue for RootStim. Last month, the company recalled about 840 bottles of its 'Feel The Beard Minoxidil Beard Growth Oil for Men' for the identical child-resistant packaging failure. That $10 product was sold on Amazon from April to September 2025.
The recall serves as a critical reminder for consumers to always check that products containing potentially hazardous substances, especially those bought online, feature appropriate safety packaging to protect vulnerable family members.
