About 122,000 cases of Gatorade have been voluntarily recalled across 37 US states because the drinks contain “undeclared” food dye, according to a federal notice. The recall affects 28oz bottles of Gatorade Lemon Lime, Lime Zero, Orange and Orange Zero.
Recall details and classification
Gatorade’s manufacturer, PepsiCo, initiated the recall on 25 September, according to the advisory posted on the US Food and Drug Administration’s website. The notice classifies the recall as class II, which the FDA describes as “a situation in which use of, or exposure to, a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote”.
The FDA notice lists “Undeclared Yellow No 6 and/or Yellow No 5” dyes as the reason for recall, citing potential sensitivity in some people. PepsiCo did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the Guardian.

The recall covers 37 states: Alaska, Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, North Dakota, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wisconsin.
