Family raises £14,000 to bring mum home after Benidorm death

A family has raised £14,000 to bring a Scottish mum home after she died suddenly following a short illness while on holiday. June Fetter died in September after a brief but “incredibly difficult” fight.

Known for her singing voice, infectious humour and vibrant personality, June was a much-loved figure in her community. Her daughter Hollie Fetter and the rest of the family launched a fundraiser to cover mortuary fees, repatriation costs and funeral arrangements to bring June home from Benidorm to Fife.

Fundraiser reaches £11,327

At the time of writing, the fundraiser had raised £11,327 of its £14,000 target. Hollie said: “It is with the heaviest of hearts that we have to share the heartbreaking news that our beautiful mum, June Fetter, has sadly passed away unexpectedly in Benidorm, following a short but incredibly difficult fight.”

She continued: “This has all happened so suddenly, and we are still struggling to come to terms with the fact that the woman who was always so full of life, happiness and laughter is no longer with us. Mum was the most loving and devoted mum we could ever have asked for. She was caring, fun, bubbly and would genuinely do anything for anyone.”

Family’s final moments in Benidorm

Hollie added: “She had a way of bringing happiness wherever she went, and anyone who knew her will know just how much life she had in her. Mum was also a singer, and music was such a huge part of who she was.”

“Her voice, her laughter and her infectious personality will stay with us forever. We were able to make it across to Benidorm to be by mum’s side in her final moments. We are so grateful that we were able to be there, hold her close and tell her how much we love her.”

Financial burden of repatriation

“We are now faced with the heartbreaking task of making arrangements to bring mum home to Scotland. As she passed away abroad, there are significant and completely unexpected costs involved,” Hollie said.

“We are currently being asked to provide money for mum to be transferred to the mortuary before we can continue with the arrangements to bring her home and give her the farewell she deserves. None of us could ever have imagined having to face something like this, and we simply weren’t prepared for the financial burden that comes with losing someone so unexpectedly abroad.”

Hollie thanked everyone who supported the family, saying: “Thank you from the bottom of our hearts to everyone who has reached out, shared memories of mum and supported us through the most difficult time of our lives. We will miss you more than words could ever say, mum.”

Tributes from the family

She added: “Keep singing up there. Your voice will always be with us.” Her son Darren said: “You were so loved by us all and many more. You were one in a billion. I will miss you everyday for the rest of my life. Keep singing up there sweetheart. I am absolutely heartbroken beyond measure.”
